ACOs

The Office of Student Affairs must approve all extracurricular activities by University-recognized associations, clubs, or organizations (ACO), and student committees, both on- and off-campus. Events that involve healthcare/outreach, alcohol, or risky activities must also obtain permission from the Dean and/or other University officials. All activities and events that involve students, faculty, or staff of the University must be appropriately scheduled to avoid conflicts with academic requirements and other professional events. Requests for permission for speakers, student meetings or activities, and other individual or group activities on campus should be made on forms through the event approval process, provided by the Office of Student Affairs at least three weeks in advance. The Office of Student Affairs must approve all activities in advance and no meeting announcements may be made until such approval is received.

Students may initiate the development of an association, club, or organization on the University campus by first approaching the Director of Student Life/Student Life Designee for an initial consultation. Following this meeting, students must submit a charter that includes a mission statement, goals, and a draft constitution or bylaws to the Office of Student Affairs. The Director of Student Life/Student Life designee will review the submission using the criteria for establishing a club or committee, and determine whether the proposal should be designated as an ACO, a student committee, or another classification. The Office of Student Affairs will then review and approve this determination. Upon official approval of the ACO or student committee designation, the organization must secure a faculty sponsor. The selected faculty sponsor must be reviewed and formally approved by the Office of Student Affairs before the organization may begin operations. An ACO or student committee is considered active once the Director of Student Life and the Associate/Assistant Dean of Student Affairs have approved the completed application. A variety of ACOs and student committees are active on campus; please contact the Office of Student Affairs for a current list.
