Clinical Dismissal

A student may be removed from a clinical site by the CRNA or DNAP faculty if it is determined that the student:

  • Is not appropriately prepared for a case
  • Presents a patient safety threat and/or
  • Is judged to interfere with the normal operation of the clinical practicum site and/or is determined to violate DNAP and/or clinical policy and/or procedure.
  • Is deemed to be an impaired provider

A clinical site may remove the ability for the student to perform in the clinical setting at that facility. Depending on removal from the clinical site, the student may be dismissed from the program. If it is determined that the student may be eligible for an alternative clinical placement, that student may have an alternative site providing that a different clinical site accepts their placement. If no alternative clinical sites accept the student, the student will be unable to progress in the program if the student has not met minimum standards for clinical experiences as set by the COA.

Students who have experienced an untoward event in the clinical setting are required to notify the clinical coordinator and the RVU didactic faculty as soon as possible. Failure to do so is related to professionalism and may result in dismissal from the program.

A student may receive a failing grade in practicum and subsequent dismissal from a program in the event of a single critical error in clinical performance.

The circumstances for clinical dismissal shall be reviewed by the Program Director and/or Assistant Program Director. The student may be required to return to campus for clinically associated remediation. A reasonable attempt should be made to remediate in clinical except in the case of a single critical error. In the event of a single critical error in clinical performance, a student may receive a failing grade in practicum and subsequent dismissal from the program.

It is the expectation that remediation attempts will be documented and acknowledged by DNAP faculty and the student. No greater than three remediation attempts may be allowed. If three unsuccessful remediation attempts, the student will received a failing grade for that corresponding clinical practicum class. If appropriate (as determined by the Program Director or Assistant Program Director), the issue may be forwarded to the DNAP Student Performance Committee (DNAP-SPC).
