In the event of accidental exposure, immediate attention and care of such exposures and injuries are vital to minimize any potential infection. Upon matriculation and each year of the program thereafter, all students are required to complete online training for prevention of exposures to infectious and environmental hazards. Additionally, prior to beginning supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs), students are provided a quick reference guide detailing appropriate procedures to follow in the event of an exposure or needlestick injury. Once a student has experienced an exposure or needlestick, the student shall seek immediate treatment in accordance with current and appropriate medical standards. The student shall immediately notify his/her preceptor and fill out all forms required by the clinical site. In addition, students shall notify the PA Program Clinical Team. The student will be directed to contact the RVU Department of Human Resources to file a claim and arrange a Workers’ Compensation clinic visit. Medical evaluation and follow-up should be conducted by a Worker’s Compensation provider selected by Rocky Vista University, and therefore all costs associated with exposure or needlestick injury are filed via Worker’s Compensation rather than through the students’ personal insurance company. Rocky Vista University has adopted policies and procedures for dealing with exposure to infectious diseases including, but not limited to HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis.
Students in the RVU PA Program are required to adhere to these guidelines.
