Remediation of a Course

Procedure

If a preclinical student fails a course and is approved to remediate the failure, the student will work with the Director of Preclinical Education, the Course Director, and the Office of Testing to develop a remediation plan and schedule. Remediation examinations will be administered by the Office of Testing and proctored by an RVU employee or designee. All preclinical remediation must be completed by June 30 of the current academic year. Re-remediation is not permitted.

If a clinical student fails a clinical clerkship rotation, the student may be referred to the Student Performance Committee (SPC), which will provide a recommendation to the Dean. If the Dean approves remediation, the student will work with the Assistant or Associate Dean of Clinical Education to develop a remediation plan for the failed clerkship. If the student fails the remediation, the student may be subject to dismissal.

Grading

A student who successfully remediates a failed course will have the transcript reflect a grade of NX for the original course failure and PX to indicate successful remediation.

All required remediation must be successfully completed before a student may advance to the next stage of the curriculum. If remediation is not completed or is unsuccessful, the original course grade will remain on the transcript. A student who fails a remediation will be referred to the Student Performance Committee and may be subject to dismissal. Re-remediation is not permitted.
